This January,

we're going dark.

We’re once again running the Dark January initiative to encourage landlords, businesses and individuals around the world to reduce energy waste in their offices. We loved seeing you all take part last year and can’t wait to make this year bigger and better.

Dark January is all about combating energy waste. We are asking businesses to turn off lights in unoccupied areas of their offices throughout the month of January as a very easy starting point, and because incremental changes build up to meaningful results.

To take part in Dark January all you need to do is:

1. Share the different ways you’re combating energy waste in your offices and homes using the hashtag #LightsOut on LinkedIn
2. Nominate others to do the same!

We’ve put together some resources and FAQs, as well as images you can share to help you get started.

Why?

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) has warned that there’s no credible pathway to 1.5°C in place for 2030.

The world is heading for a catastrophe unless we take immediate steps to reduce emissions.

Despite this, 28% of global energy related emissions come from the energy used to power buildings and 30% of the energy used in commercial buildings is wasted. UK businesses alone are wasting enough energy to power London for seven years.

Cities being lit up by office buildings outside of working hours are a visual representation of this preventable waste. Going #LightsOut is low hanging fruit and a good place to start reducing energy waste.

It's time to go #LightsOut this January. Let's combat the 30% of energy wasted in commercial buildings together.
